Autism assessments for children

Child autism assessments are completed across four appointments, followed by a comprehensive written report.

Appointment 1

Getting to know you and your child

Parent/s and child attend together. Your psychologist will talk with you about what has brought you to assessment, get to know your child, and begin gathering information.

Appointment 2

Developmental history

One or both parents meet with the psychologist to discuss your child’s developmental history and experiences. Autism questionnaires are completed, and with your consent, information may also be gathered from school or other important people in your child’s life.

Appointments 3 & 4

Further assessment

Your child and parent/s return for two further appointments. These sessions may include conversation, questionnaires and observation.

Looking for an adult autism assessment?

Adult autism assessments are completed across three one-hour sessions, followed by a comprehensive written report. Across these appointments, your psychologist will explore your developmental history, current experiences, strengths and support needs.

How do we assess autism?

Our psychologists use the Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum, Second Edition (MIGDAS-2) and other evidence-based autism assessment questionnaires and tools, selected according to the person’s age and individual circumstances.

Assessment isn’t based on one questionnaire, score or appointment. Your psychologist considers information gathered across the whole assessment, including developmental history, current experiences, questionnaires, discussion and observation.

Information considered:

  • Developmental history

  • Current experiences

  • Discussion and observation

  • Strengths and support needs

What happens after the assessment?

Your report

A comprehensive written report outlining the assessment findings and recommendations based on the person’s individual strengths and support needs.

Feedback appointment

You can book a feedback appointment with your psychologist to discuss the findings, ask questions and talk through the recommendations.

Ongoing support

Follow-up therapy appointments are available at Thriving Now if ongoing support would be helpful.

Assessments and NDIS access

If you or your child receives an ASD Level 2 or Level 3 diagnosis, you may be eligible to apply for NDIS funding.

Funding may assist with ongoing therapeutic and disability supports.

If you are seeking an assessment to support an NDIS application, we recommend working with a multidisciplinary team. For children, this may include a paediatrician; for adults, a psychiatrist. The NDIS may require evidence from multiple sources to determine eligibility.

Once you have your assessment report and any other relevant professional reports, you can include these as supporting evidence in an NDIS application.
